Action Jackson’s 2nd day in Singapore

With our newly self-proclaimed Singapore Expert Status (we did walk around for a day and see one museum- obviously that equates to expert level genius) we decided to ask around to find out what we should do the second day.

We were told by another family the Botanic Gardens were worth checking out – especially the orchids. I’m always down for seeing forms of photosynthesis, so we were a go. Continue Reading »

Action Jackson and Day 1 in Singapore

We awoke (too early) on our first day in Singapore. But we know the drill: try to convert to your new time zone as quickly as possible or sleep at the wrong times at your own peril.

So we dragged ourselves to the delightfully enormous breakfast buffet at the Westin hotel. The buffet was really an extrapolation of the population of Singapore: Western pastries and cereal, Chinese fish soup stocks with funky looking chopped stuff to add to them, sushi, dal and naan, bacon, eggs and about 10 types of fruit juice. Needless to say, our brains may have been tired but our stomachs were full of international flavors!

My main approach to dealing with jet lag involves constant movement. I learned when I was an exchange student in Denmark that if instead of passing out, you go for a long hike or bike ride:

  1. It’s much harder (though not impossible) to fall asleep while moving thus defeating exhaustion (curse you ill timed exhaustion!!!);
  2. You’re so exhausted at night you can actually fall asleep when you do finally got to bed;
  3. You can see stuff while you walk/bike around (provided you can keep your eyes open).

Winning!

Singapore is a really interesting independent republic. It is built on a diverse background of leadership and immigration. It was independent. Conquered by Japan in WWII. Back to British control. Merged with Malaysia, got kicked out and and finally became independent in 1965. Now hosts diverse breakfast buffets. You get the drill.

We walked to the “Palace of Heavenly Blessings”, the oldest Chinese temple in Singapore. (See photo of awesome door guard). AJ and I rang bells, put our hands in prayer position, made wishes and threw coins in the well as per instructed. We shall see if they come true.

We toodled around Chinatown, walked through the city some and ended up in the Singapore City Gallery. The museum has the history of Singapore, including two scale models of all the buildings/developments/etc in the city. Given the dense population and limited land the country works to balance green spaces with developments. For example, many of the buildings have green areas 20 floors up, and we saw multiple vertical gardens. Cool stuff.

By late afternoon we found ourselves exhausted (six miles of walking will do that to you), hot and sweaty and ready to be done.

Fortunately, Mike is a genius and reserved us a hotel with a 25 yard infinity pool on the 35th floor. Did I mention they also served caipirinhas??

Bliss!

Jackson’s notes:

The next day we walked to Chinatown. It felt like it was 300 degrees.???? we saw a really cool temple ⛩⛩⛩⛩⛩⛩ surprisingly everything was expensive????????????????

we also walked to the Singapore city museum!!!!!!!! ????

The museum had a 3D model replica of Singapore and lots of interactive computer screens with information about Singapore !!!!

Action Jackson and the trip to Southeast Asia

Greetings from Singapore!

I realize if I were a normal (sane) person I would do this communication sharing on Facebook or Instagram or some other social media. But while I am social, I do not have the medias. Also because I thought you might like to join us (virtually) on our EPIC trip to Singapore and Bali! [I’m now putting this on the blog and syndicating it to Facebook. You’re welcome -Ed.] Continue Reading »

Action Jackson and Mama’s DC trip!

photo 1 (3)A few days ago AJ told me “I’m glad you’re going away: you’re always home and Daddy goes away. Now we’ll get some boys’ time!”

And I thought, okay, good, no worries.

Then last night at bedtime he freaked and was sobbing “No, I don’t want boys’ time, I want whole family time, with all three of us!!!”

Sigh. I can never win.

Ah well, at least we all look cute, and he was a little better today. (He told me at the airport, with high confidence, that when he’s 12 he’s going on a trip alone, all by himself, somewhere where he doesn’t know anyone. He won’t need any help: he’s just going. He was quite bummed to hear that his plan’s not legal, but he supposed he could wait until he were 18, if he had to and all.)

Dr. J completes her first triathlon and lives to tell about it!

It all started out last summer when my friend and neighbor, Marie-Pier, enrolled in a weight loss program at the University of MN. She was motivated and on track, but wanted to make sure she didn’t lose momentum. She told me she had a great idea: why didn’t we both sign up for the YWCA Women’s sprint tri (swim 500 yards, bike 15.2 miles, run a 5k) to push us both to get in better shape and be healthier.I was instantly worried that her program had caused a brain aneurysm leading to mental instability and delusions. Me, a triathlon?!?!  I like exercising and all, but I haven’t competed in an athletic event since I was in my 20s, and even then I was only ever a short distance swimmer. Upon further reflection, however, it did make sense to challenge myself, and it’s never a bad thing to get in better shape. So I gave her a tentative yes, depending on how I held up along the way. If increasing my workouts resulted in my knees exploding or body parts falling off, well then I was out. Continue Reading »

Faces at Tartine

“Let’s just go to the front if the line and ask if we can look at the pastries so I know if they have brownies.”

Dolores Park

Is pretty great on a sunny Saturday. (DJ included of course)

First Homework

photo (1)Jackson totally loved school and is psyched for tomorrow.

From his homework (which is hard to read, his words in bold):

When it was time to
go home I felt SAD because I wanted to WORK. Tomorrow I will DO STUFF.

Good deal!

mjg comment: it looks like he wrote “After that we MADE BEER,” but it actually says “BEES“. I would be totally down with Kindergarten Beer, though.

Action Jackson and the first day of school

photo 1 (2)Yes, it’s true: we have reached the point where our baby boy is now a big school aged kid!

Jackson started this morning in Ms. Sissler’s class (along with 27 other kids) in the neighborhood school, Lake Harriet Lower, conveniently located two blocks away. Minneapolis switched to full day kindergarten this year, so he’s there from 9:40 to 4:00 each day and he will also be at RecPlus at the Minneapolis parks before and afterwards. Busy busy boy I tells ya. Whew.

Fortunately, he’s been really pumped about going to school and has only had a few moments of nervousness. Or, as he put it: “Mama, I’m only this nervous,” as he held up his hand showing just a little space between his thumb and his first finger. He told me he was sad to leave his old school yesterday, but he was really ready to start the new one. Fortunately, one of his bestest buddies from his old school, Hank, is in his class and there are other kids he knows in other classes which also helps. It also turns out that two other members of my South High swim team also have kids in the same class. Never underestimate the power of chlorine!

We are excited for a fun and busy year full of learning.

They told me the popsicle was dairy free

photo 2 (1)But then the label says “made with strawberries and cream.” So AJ gets two treats — winning!
