Graglo given final eviction notice!!!
So we just got back from what in theory is my last OB visit (woohoo โ no more thousands of hours sitting in that boring place chock full of knocked up ladies!) Graglo is doing well โ the non-stress test showed everything is fine and my blood pressure and numbers all look fine too. I started having some very noticeable contractions on Sunday nite โ my stomach became rock hard and well it wasn’t the most pleasant thing ever as those of you who have been through the process probably remember. Mike made me time them (boโring!) and they’re not regular, so we’re not too worried that Graglo’s going to fall at my feet – yet.
I don’t think Graglo likes the contractions though because every time they stopped, there was much pounding from the inside like โhey, quit squeezing me people, I need some space!!โ Needless to say my abdomen has been the location of much excitement these past few days. It’s probably going to be weird to not have constant pounding and movement from my midriff when this is all over. I’ll probably suffer from boring belly syndrome ๐
Anyway, I digress. My regular OB is on vacation so I saw a different doc today. She asked if my regular OB had discussed birth plans with us given that I’m due next Tuesday on the 26th. I said no. She said that given that I keep having migraines (I had another smallish one on Sunday) there’s no reason for me to go past my due date. Also, when she checked I’m now 1 cm dilated and she said she could feel that things were softening and shifting as they should, so it seems like things are definitely moving in the right direction to get Graglo out and into a larger space.
The final plans are that if Graglo does not make an appearance beforehand, Mike and I are to go to GW on the 26th at 6:00 pm to get a prostaglandin treatment to get the process started, I spend the nite there, then at 6:00 am on the 27th they give me pitocin, and if I follow regular time lines the baby should come out sometime in the afternoon on the 27th. However, if I take after my mom, then perhaps I will sneeze and Graglo will come shooting out at 6:10 am taking out a doc or two on the way. I’m betting on something more like the latter.
And there you have it. Now I just need to finish the 4 quilts I decided I needed to make before Graglo comes (1 for Graglo and 3 extras to be on the safe side), we need to finish making the sheets for the crib โ Mike did an excellent job of sewing one last nite although he had an unexpected elastic snafu, so he’s going to try to finish it up tonite โ and we need to get the car seat in the car, and we need to be prepared for that minor ‘parenting’ thing. Besides that, it looks like all systems GO!
No worries, we’ll keep you posted ๐

More nursery
We received the crib last weekend, and I finally got enough stuff moved out of the back room that it’s starting to look more like a nursery. Here’s the crib — a Stokke Sleepi — set up as a rolling bassinet. It’s just small enough to fit through the doorways and roll (really nice wheels) from the back to the front of our apartment. Later on, when the baby grows too big for this size, we’ll put in the extra side pieces and the larger mattress.
I moved the changing table in as well, and K2 organized the drawers (now we need to get some drawer dividers — those baby clothes are wee and numerous). But you can’t see the two drawer file cabinet on the other side of the changing table, where the baby will keep all the relevant paperwork. (The cabinet won’t fit under the counter in the front room where I have the rest of the computing gear.)
K2 has been sewing up some black and white (and red) play mats, and I guess we’ll see if they get finished before the baby does.
Graglo arrival update – 18 days to due date…
So I have spent another 5 hrs of my life in the OB’s office this week โ 3 hrs on Monday for the non-stress test (baby not stressed, me not stressed before sitting there for 3 hrs, kinda enraged by the end) and 2 hrs Tuesday for my regular check-up. I wish they had snacks, better art or at least mostly nekkid male models to make the visits more interesting, but alas, they have none of the above. Just a lot of knocked-up looking ladies and some bored looking husbands. Sometimes some cute kids though which is always a plus…
The good news is that my doc is very happy with my numbers โ blood pressure, weight gain, baby’s growth as measured by the length of belly (after 16 weeks or so the number of inches (or cm I can’t remember which) ย from the bottom to the top of the bulge is supposed to be the number of weeks you are plus or minus 1), head is still down โ and Graglo kicked her when she pushed down to feel the head, indicating response to stimulus, probably gets that from Mike I’m sure โ etc all looked good.
They start doing a physical at 37 weeks โ which I was on Wednesday according to their files. I asked her to check me anyway since Mike was in Vegas, and if it looked like Graglo was going to pop out momentarily, advanced warning would be good. She said I’m not at all dilated, but that I’m 25% effaced. For those of you who have not just participated in a bunch of birthing classes and who might not know, effacing is the thinning of the cervix, so in order to deliver you need to be dilated to 10 cm and 100% effaced. I asked her if she could predict timing based on my numbers and she said ‘no’. However, at least we know that Graglo’s not going to fall out when I sneeze at this point. Fortunately,ย the baby stayed in there โ hiccuping and fidgeting โ until last nite when Mike got back. I figured that Mike was there to start this process, it’s only fair if he’s there to see it through to the ending of the process.
I know Graglo would like to move out of the studio and into a large space at this point, and quite frankly, I’m not opposed to the idea myself what with our constant battles over space, but now is not quite the time yet. A tad more fattening would be good โ of Graglo that is, not me.
I’ve also had an epiphany: when Graglo gets the hiccups 4-5 times a day, there is frequently squirming and lots of movement associated with said hiccups. At first I thought the baby was annoyed by the hiccups, which is why it moved at the same time. Now I realize that perhaps Graglo is practicing in-utero beat-boxing โ laying down those smooth lines and grooving to the beat. Now I also realize that beat-boxing is not a skill either Mike or I have, but like Mike says, it could be a recessive gene. Maybe my Grandpa Bill would have been the first and finest Polish-American Beat-Boxer if only he’d been given the opportunity. I will watch carefully to see if Graglo seems to keep on honing the skills after joining the rest of us.
And there you have it. The beating (Graglo) and waddling (me) will continue until further notice…
