Peek-a-boo! We’re in Minneapolis!

Ah yes. Yes, we know. There have been a paucity of blog postings of late. We have excuses, good and varied and even true excuses, but who likes excuses? Certainly not me nor anyone I know. To solve this situation, I have decided that there’s no point in me feeling guilty that I’ve missed posting for so long. I can’t possibly go back and recreate what happened- Mike still hasn’t used his mad computer skills to break the time/space continuum despite the fact that I’ve repeatedly asked him to do so (computer hacking skills indeed!)…….and then mostly because I doubt I can remember what happened.  Instead we’re going to do what therapists and spiritual advisers say you’re supposed to do- live in the now, and only look forward. Also, it helps to avoid walking into walls.

Welcome to our NOW! So what’s going on you might ask? Well, we’ve been involved in a long and protracted battle against cardboard boxes filled with our crap. We want them gone, they like our new digs and refuse to budge- even a little- unless we or some kind person helping us empties them, cuts them apart and stacks them neatly in our garage. It’s not an agreement I would have negotiated, but it seems this is how it’s been since the dawn of time, or more likely, the invention of cardboard boxes. Have no fear, we are winning this battle, and our house is starting to look like people live here. Which we like, because we are the people who live here. Funny how that works.

Tahoe trip 2010

We once again headed to Truckee (and Reno) to visit with our Bay Area (and Idaho) pals. Photos are in the gallery, and here’s what Jackson saw out the window of the 777 he and I were riding to San Francisco:

Moving to Minneapolis

Br'er AbbottYes, it’s true. After about five years of living in DC, we are moving back to the Midwest! We hear from reliable sources that it’s a good place to grow up and raise kids. 🙂 We have a house under contract and the closing date is set for the end of March. Our goal is to move to Minneapolis in May (fingers crossed).

We are both excited and nervous to start this new phase of our lives. Mike will continue to do his same job remotely. It’s not clear what I will do yet: I’ve told my boss of the move, and he’s going to try to get me approved to work remotely. But, since it’s government, there’s a lot of bureaucracy involved, so we’ll have to see. I’m also looking for agriculture-related jobs in Minneapolis as well.

What does the house look like, you ask? Well, thanks to the miracle of the Internet, we can show you!

The builders’ website of the house is: http://3-ad.com/brerabbott/

And we have our photos in the gallery.

The house has a guest room, so we’d happy to have you come and visit after we’re moved in (hint hint).

Big kisses and an even bigger moving van!

Action Jackson and the 18 month update

We now have the proof to support the theory (and sore backs): we have a big and healthy and rapidly growing boy!

AJ and I went in for his 18 month appointment today. First off, he had to run around the waiting room picking up every copy of parenting and new baby magazine and declare ‘BABY!’ and then show every other person sitting in the waiting room that yes, he did in fact hold a photo of a baby in his hand in case there was any confusion in the matter.

When we met with our doctor she was very pleased with his progress. She asked if he knew 10 words and then paused and said, “Actually, I think I’ve already heard him say more than that in the past 5 minutes.” Correct. We agreed he knew far more than 20 words. I actually have no idea how many words he knows. He keeps saying new ones that we didn’t know he knew all the time.

Side bar: one of his newest words is “Obama”. Since his daycare is in a Federal building (USDA Forest Service building to be specific) there are photos of Obama by the entrance. He was pointing at it one day and I told him that was Obama and he started saying “Oh-Baama”. Mike wondered if he actually recognizes Obama or if he just knew the one photo. AJ very helpfully answered that question this morning on the drive to the doctors when he pointed at the Obama bumper sticker on the car in front of us and loudly proclaimed “Oh-Baama!!” He is a DC baby to be sure.

Anyway, the Doc says he’s developmentally on track or perhaps even slightly ahead of track. He certainly runs around as if he’s always on a track. Action Jackson Go Go Go!!

Physical stats (and let’s all give a shout-out here to the Scandinavian genes and their super-growth powers):

head 49.5 cm = 90%

height 34 inches = 90%

weight 26 lbs 15 oz = 65%

Hear Ye Hear Ye: Action Jackson turned 1 year old!!

muffin

Yes, it’s true. It turns out that if you’re born, and you are lucky enough to be healthy and someone is nice enough to take care of you for 365 days – even though you cry a lot and you aren’t potty trained and you tend to wake everyone up during the night screaming – you turn 1 exactly a year later.

Not wanting to break with tradition – or the laws of physics – Jackson did just that on August 28th.

Wooo-hoooo!

And not only did he celebrate his birthday on one day: no, that would not be enough for our boy, he grandparents daycarecelebrated it for two whole days!!

The first day of celebration was on his actual birthday, Friday. It is daycare tradition to bring in cupcakes for the kid’s birthdays. However, Mike and I are “those parents”, and we don’t really want AJ eating cupcake at this stage in his life. So, every other kid’s birthday, we’ve told them “NO CUPCAKES” and he gets grapes or Cheerios or some other equally lame thing that parents like us insist on instead. This, of course, posed a bit of dilemma when his birthday came up: we wanted to share with others, but we’re known as the anti-cupcake people.

Fortunately, my mother solved the dilemma for us: blueberry muffins! They shadow penguinshave fruit so they’re healthy and they look like a cupcake so kids will want to eat them. Done and done! Jackson was not only fortunate enough to celebrate with his daycare buddies, but Grandma and Grandpa Graven came too. Apparently it was fun muffin mayhem for all to see.

So what happened for the second day of birthday fun?

cannoli b-dayOn Saturday, we went to the beautiful National Aquarium in Baltimore, with all four grandparents and a wonderful assortment of friends. We looked at fish, we looked at sharks, we looked at bubbles, we looked at other kids and then, for super extra fun, we saw the dolphin show! A great time was had by all.

And to finish it all off, we went to a wonderful Italian restaurant and had delicious pastas and pizzas for dinner. Jackson finished it all off with a birthday cannoli. At first he was dubious and refused to open his mouth. But once he tasted the delicious goodness of that which is cannoli, I could not stuff it into his face fast enough. At one point I feared he would suck my fingers right off of my hands. Fortunately this did not come to pass, as that would have really changed the tenor of the day.

whole birthday bunchAll in all it was a wonderful, extended birthday celebration and if I’ve understood this whole time passing/Earth spinning/person growing correctly, I hear he’s going to have another one next year on the exact same day.

Who knew?

Action Jackson: Eater of blackberries, or axe murderer?!?!

Our boy is a berry monster. He likes blueberries, raspberries, blackberries- you name the berry, we’re betting he’ll scarf it like there’s no tomorrow. We’re trying to vary the foods he eats to ensure that he has a good diet and reduce the chance that he becomes a picky eater. This has not been a problem to date: the only food he’s ever rejected was some yogurt that had gone bad. We couldn’t figure out why he wouldn’t eat it until Mike tasted it and realized that it was rancid. Neither of us could really argue with his reasoning.

Last night on the way home we picked up blackberries for an after dinner treat. The boy enjoyed both eating the berries and expressing his inner creativity with the juices. Alternatively, we think he may have a future career in slasher films.

Where’s Action Jackson?!?! Mom and Dad alone in Maine

self portrait, bar harborWell, it’s happened. We snuck away and had a good time WITHOUT the baby!!!

I know. I know. You didn’t think it was possible, but we’re telling you, it is.

How did this all happen? Well, Mike and I were trying to have a conversation while doing laundry,  picking up small bits of food strewn across the floor, blocking the baby from pulling out electric cords and/or shoving his tongue into an electric socket and trying to hear each other over the constant sound of “Buh, buh buh buh, hi, hi, buh, buh buh buh” coming out of the mouth of our beloved babe. It was then we realized: we really really needed some time away.

Fortunately the universe aligned and we could both get time off at the same time my parents were free to fly out and take care of AJ. YAY!

So where did we go? We decided that for once we did not want to fly a long way, we did not want to have to speak a different language and/or leave the country (and yes, I do realize that for us this is rather shocking), we wanted to go somewhere cooler temperature wise, and I wanted to go somewhere I’d never been before. Using biology, chemistry, physics and computer science we created a super half-biological, half- computer programming formula where we put in all of the above parameters and out popped: Bar Harbor, Maine.  (Also, that’s where most of our friends  and family told us to go.)biking in acadia

We had an AWESOME time. I call the trip ‘our non-competitive, non-contiguous triathalon’ as there was swimming, biking and hiking- all at a leisurely pace and none of which required a diaper change or emergency Cheerios. YES!

Highlights of the trip including me discovering Sorbetto- which is a non-dairy gelato that is to DIE for made by Gelato Fiasco out of Maine. The chocolate is sooooo chocolatey it defies the laws of physics. Seriously- I had a hard time keeping my feet on the ground as I ate it. There was the hiking and biking in Acadia National park. There was the eating in many fine restaurants without having food smeared all over our clothes.

view from planeAnd finally, most awesome of all was the bi-plane ride we airplane shottook to see the whole island. Incredible.

On our last day we had plans to go on another hike, but then we decided to do the most indulgent thing of all for people with small children: read. We sat in a park and we read. We got a sandwich from the local food co-op and we read. We got some ice cream and we read. Then, for a change of pace we went back to our B&B, sat by the pool, and read. Finally, we went up to our room, and read. It was truly a thing of beauty.

Action Jackson and the Very Boring 5 days at Home

AJ applesWe have now come to realize that Action Jackson is a more appropriate name for the boy than we had first realized.

The boy has been “off” in terms of his behavior since his last round of immunizations, about two weeks ago. Cranky, eating tons, sleeping lots, just not his normal chipper self. Last Tuesday, he was sent home early from daycare with a fever over 100. When I picked him up, he AJ zoodid not look good, he had that glazed-eyes-fever look. Starting Tuesday night, he had a consistently high fever of 103. I called the nurse line to ask what to do – especially since we were supposed to fly to the Bay Area for a wedding on Thursday afternoon. She said to give him ibuprofen and bring him in the next morning to check him out.  At the doctor’s visit, after a lot of digging wax out of his ears, we found out that he had a double ear-infection. He was prescribed antibiotics, we were told that taking him on an airplane would be cruel to him and any other hearing person who might be around and that he had to stay home from daycare on Thursday and Friday.

AJ rock onWe now have a copious amount of data indicating that five days at home with mom and dad is NOT GOOD in AJ’s mind. No matter how many activities Mike and I plan, we simply cannot compete with a room full of 12 babies, 4 day care providers and a constant stream of activity and toys. During our “stay-cation” we read lots and lots of books, we went to the zoo twice, we went to the park six times, we tried on all sorts of hats and head-wear, we went to the grocery store numerous times, we went on errands, we went to Target, our babysitter came on Sunday for five hours and the two of them went back to the park for more fun, and finally on Sunday night we went to the drumming circle where we listened to drums and I danced with AJ for about half an hour. This was simply not enough.

AJ hatsLast night, the boy woke up at 3:30 am SCREAMING. This happens on occasion and usually remedies itself. [[ And he sleeps about six feet from our bedroom. –mjg ]] No problem. But the screaming went on and on and on, so Mike got up, took his temp (normal) changed his diaper, bounced some hugs and put him back to bed. SCREAMING. We waited it out about another 20 minutes at which point Mike said “the only other thing I can think of is that he’s thirsty”. I got up, made a small bottle of milk, gave it to him, bounced him, put him back in bed and stroked the back of his head and neck in a soothing way. He was fine until I left the room. SCREAMING. We waited another 20 minutes until I said, “okay, I’ll bounce him on the yoga ball”. I brought him to the front room, I bounced him for a few seconds, then he slid out of my arms onto the floor. He made a happy AJ bookssound and then crawled over to his toys and proceeded to read some books to himself while  chatting in a chipper and nonchalant way. Of course. After all this is what we always do at 4:45 in the morning.

Apparently, the cause of the hour and a half of SCREAMING from 3:30 am to 5:00 am was extreme boredom. Can you blame him?  No one ever takes him anywhere or ever does anything fun with him and his life is just a long series of drudgery upon drudgery.

AJ going to schoolHe finally fell back asleep around 5:15 when I carried him – SCREAMING – back to bed. He slept until 6:30 when he woke up SCREAMING and Mike decided that he might as well get up and bring the boy to daycare and end all of our suffering. You can see the look of sweet anticipation on his face as they drove to daycare this morning. We can only hope that a fun filled day with his daycare homies will satisfy his needs for excitement and our need for a SCREAMING free night of sleep.
