Return to Minneapolis and the 20-year reunion

It’s happened. Time has passed and I have become old. Sigh… and sigh again, followed by a creaking back and a few gray hairs (HA got you there, I don’t have any gray hairs, or if I do, no one – including me – can see them, ’cause I’m blonde. Sha-zam on all you brunettes and redheads — now who’s the dumb blonde?!?) Ahem.

highschool graduationSo I was a-sayin’ that I am no longer as young as I once was, to the point that it’s been 20 years since I graduated from South High School — with honors. Yep, just had to throw that in there. Did I also mention that I also lettered four times and was the co-captain of my swim team and the treasurer of National Honor Society and like, I swear that cute guy in my 4th hour class like totally thought I was cute??!?! Oh, it’s true.

I missed the 10-year reunion, so I really wanted to make the 20th. Mike was kind/crazy enough to agree to go with me, so we had a weekend in Minneapolis where we saw my old friends and some of my old not-so-much friends who seem much cooler now and — added bonus — my high school boyfriend Scott and my prom date Leif. Leif is now a reunion phototravel writer for Lonely Planet and is still super cool. Scott, too, remains the same.

While Mike and I had reunion fun, AJ had family fun galore! Photos from this fun-filled weekend can be found here: Kirsten’s 20th HS reunion

Action Jackson and the Very Busy month of July

iphone-photo-8-4-09 015

It’s pretty obvious that we haven’t been blogging much lately. We have brilliant ideas for blog posts, we’re all set to write them, and then, well, life happens. Keeps happening in fact. And keeps happening faster and faster, as our little chaos maker gains size and skills.

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

July started off like every other month for parents with a small kidlet. We’re busy and tired and there’s always more to do, but this should surprise no one. The important thing is that we were keeping our heads above water and making it. Barely, but making it.

And then comes the Chaos Maker and all hell breaks loose. Our boy has been slow on the whole crawling/walking front. He’s good with bouncing, and with fine motor skills – like picking up peas to eat – but crawling and walking, not a whole lot of interest. He hated tummy time, and when we put his favorite toys at a distance to entice him to move his response was to crawl one step and reach and reach and complain and reach and then, oh look, there’s a toy I can reach from here. Screw this crawling business, I’ll just play with that instead. No dice.

We picked him up at daycare one evening, and the providers tell us that AJ crawled! Only a tiny bit, and the key was to not look at him directly or he stopped. So I put him on the rug, put his favorite toys at a distance and pretended to study the cobwebs on the ceiling. After a bit of stopping and starting he did actually move a few feet – mind you, this was after the attempt where his arms went forward and his legs went backwards and he cried out in frustration a few times that he was putting in lots of effort but not getting anywhere.

Okay so the boy crawls, but not so much it’s a problem as he’s a short distance guy. Then we learn from daycare that he’s advanced to distance crawling and when appropriately motivated, he can get his speed on too. Apparently Matthew dropped a cracker across the room and AJ took off like a shot. That’s our boy: motivated by carbs.

Very Busy Month of July part 1? Accomplished.

Part 2 is brought to you by hair growth. As unexpected and flabbergasting as it may be, our boy haircuthas a full head of hair.  It took me two turns around the sun to cover my bald head, but he got some hair gene from someone (I’m guessing it’s Mike’s side of the family, ’cause I’m quite sure it ain’t mine!) He was starting to look a bit shaggy so we took him in to get his haircut. It actually went pretty well – our hairdresser has two kids, so she’s good at the rapid dive and snip from practicing on her own two.  Pictures from this momentous occasion can be found here: Jackson’s first haircut

Very Busy Month of July part 2? Accomplished.

hat and droolThe last part of the Very Busy month of July is brought to you by an over-active tooth fairy who really should take a chill pill. The boy has been rocking the two lower teeth look for quite some time now.  It’s cute, we like it, but we’re not sure it’s really going to translate well into adulthood. Well, worry no longer, AJ got teeth and he got teeth with a vengeance – 4 count them, 4 started coming in all at once. There was drooling, there was crying all night, and now, there are teeth!

Hi, Elise!

Peanut!

Peanut!

Super news from Chicago: Kathy and Nathan and Henry welcomed Elise Martha to the family yesterday! She’s “a peanut” according to Kathy, entering the world at seven and a half pounds. Everybody’s doing great. Woohoo! More cousins.

Action Jackson and the trip to Lutsen, MN

kay b-dayMy aunt Kay turned 70. WoooHooo. Okay, it happened a few years ago, but let’s not get bogged down in the details. Kay is 70! WooooooHoooooo!!!

And to celebrate this momentous occasion, Kay decided to have a family reunion. It was several years in the making, but it did finally happen the weekend of June 26th. Mike, Jackson and I flew to Minneapolis, and then we all drove up to far, far Northern Minnesota to the town of Lutsen and all of the Jaglo/Fogelbergs hung out and had a great time. There was swimming, playing with the baby, eating, playing with the baby, card playing, playing with the baby, visiting the town of Grand Marais – which, importantly, has the best doughnuts in the world – playing with the baby, and so on. You get the idea.

This just in: Mike on TV

wind blown boysYes, it’s true. This is not a post about our Super Baby, this is a post about our Super-Baby-Daddy, Mike.

Mike was at a work conference for two days, and since he’s a computer security guru, and he looks good in the company color of burgundy, he was interviewed by Fox News!! His interview can be seen here.

We are now accepting applications for his fan club 🙂

Happy Father’s Day!!!

iphone-photo-3-29 035

Here’s hoping you fathers out there had a great day!

We here had a fun father’s day. The babysitter came, and Mike and I saw the first movie we’ve seen since we had the baby!! WoooHooo, party time at the Gravenlo’s!!!!

Ahem. We saw Away We Go which was totally awesome, and we highly recommend it – especially if you’ve ever had kids, thought about kids, know people with kids or have seen a pregnant woman or a kid.

iphone-photo-3-29 004We returned home to a fun picnic on the floor in the living room with our friend Amanda where AJ ‘fed’ himself broccoli… and we’re using the term loosely here, anywhere on the head vicinity is a win, and boy did he have lots of wins.

His fine dining technique resulted in a bath and some very cute Father’s Day post-bath photos.

Shameless pitch for cool things to buy from friends and family

Let’s be honest: Mike and I are some talented folks, in our own humble opinions anyway. And as talented folks, we like to surround ourselves with other talented folks. It’s just how we roll.

So in the past few days, we got new and exciting info about two new and exciting projects in the arts that you as consumers can buy. And since we’re so proud of the makers of these fine products, as well as the quality of the products ourselves, we’re giving them a plug here. Wow, I’m even kinda sounding like a sales person. Who knew???

For those of you who don’t know, my dad, Jack, is literally a Jack-of-all-trades. He does woodworking, he makes frames, he cuts mats, he teaches photography at the local community school, and he takes a mighty fine picture himself. He was asked to submit photos to the Emergency Foodshelf Network in Minnesota for their fundraising notecards called “Artwork for Tummies”. One of his photos was selected, and a card with the photo on it can be purchased here.

His info is:
Artist: Jack Jaglo#022
Title: Floured Arches.

I met my friend Sarah Schmelling in Denmark in 1991. Unlike me, she did not become a science geek but instead became a literature/writing geek. She’s done all kinds of writing on all kinds of things and has a book coming out soon!  It’s called ‘Ophelia Joined the Group Maidens Who Don’t Float: Classic Lit Signs on to Facebook’. It’s basically taking the classics and writing them up as if they were Facebook updates. She published Hamlet: Facebook News Feed Edition on McSweeney’s Internet Tendency. More info about Sarah and her upcoming book – including how to preorder it – can be found at http://maidenswhodontfloat.com/.

DC chaos and Action Jackson becomes a bag-man

If you’ve seen the news over the past few days then you’ve probably seen that a crazy man walked into the Holocaust Museum on Wednesday and started shooting. Fortunately the other guards were able to subdue him. Unfortunately not until after he shot a guard who later died from the injuries. A horrible situation all around.

Why am I bringing this all up?

I work in the main USDA building across the street from the Holocaust Museum, and Jackson’s daycare is in the building next to the Museum.  In late morning on Wed, I started hearing helicopters. Only government helicopters are allowed to fly over USDA (and they normally don’t). Something was up. During staff meeting in my boss’s office, USDA IT sent out alert messages that there was a “situation” at the Holocaust Museum. I started panicking  – no parent wants to hear that their kid is next to a “situation”. I must have turned pale, because my boss told me to leave the meeting and call daycare.  I got through right away and was assured that everyone was fine. The whole building was under lockdown – no one was getting in or out, and Jackson was happily sitting in the corner playing. Whew.

As the afternoon progressed we started to learn more. The gunman had been shot and taken to George Washington University hospital. We continued to hear sirens outside, we saw news media trucks, more helicopters and more chaos. We received a new message that everyone on the wing facing the Museum should leave immediately and go home. It was reassuring that the U.S. Government, DC and USDA had such great and effective emergency response teams. It was, however, NERVE WRACKING that the response seemed to take forever while my baby was locked down – perhaps an indication of more to come?? (Turns out they were checking for explosives in the guy’s car. Fortunately there were none.)

Mike and I called back and forth with updates. Our original plan had been that I would go swimming and Mike would bring the boy home. This was no longer viable. The 14th Street bridge between Mike’s office and AJ’s daycare was closed, the street in front of daycare was obviously closed and traffic was already nightmarish at 3:00. It wasn’t hard to imagine what it would be like at quitting time. We came to the conclusion that when we could get the boy out, I should be the one to bring him home.

Why was this a problem, you ask?

Since I wasn’t planning to bring him home, I didn’t have any way to get him home. The boy is now 20 lbs 7 oz and almost 30 inches tall. Also, he likes to bend sideways and try to reach out and grab anything he thinks he has a chance at getting. So you’re walking along… and suddenly he dives to the side and his arms shoot out – really awesome when you’re trying to keep your balance and not keel over sideways or careen into walls. It’s not exactly the easiest task to carry him great distances – especially considering I was going to take the Metro, involving escalators and massive crowds.

Now I had two stresses: getting him out of the situation safely, and then getting him home without injuring any of the parties involved.

At 4:30, the DC police escorted all of the kids to the lunchroom in my building. I raced downstairs to find a lunchroom full of small children doing pretty much what you’d think a lunchroom full of small children would do. Chaos! The kids from the infant room were all clustered together, and I saw AJ in a glass crib on wheels -not unlike a fish in a tank- happily looking around the room.

On the plus side, the boy was safe and we could now go home. On the minus side, we still lacked a baby locomotion device.

Mike and I use those cloth recyclable grocery bags for shopping and carrying around the vast quantities of crap we seem to always need for the boy. If I can carry a 10 lb bag of flour and other groceries around in the bag, why not a 20 lb baby?

And so the ‘baby in bag’ concept was created. Or, you could say Jackson had his first run as a bag-man.  His initial reaction to being put in the bag was “what is this crap?” Fortunately this was quickly followed by his second reaction of “whatever”. While seated he was tall enough to peek out the top and check things out. The metro went pretty smoothly. I heard a few people exclaim “she’s got a BABY in her bag!!!!”  but most people didn’t notice since, let’s face it, it’s not really something you look for. I knew it couldn’t be that uncomfortable, because he fell asleep.

While we have no photos of the actual trip home, we do have photos of a re-creation of the event we did last nite. Enjoy!

Underwear is the new hat

It’s finally summer, and time for new summer looks. Are you bored with your current style? Are you looking for that something new? Something that will give you that extra edge that won’t cost you an arm and a leg?

Well look no further. We’ve come up with one potential look that the men or the ladies can sport. New, Sassy, Trendy, Hip, Cutting Edge, Inexpensive. I know, I know, you’re speechless. We understand. We can’t help that we’re so cool. That’s just how we roll.

Our friends Sarah, Mike and Owen came to visit us, and we went out to eat Mexican food where Jackson unveiled his new look to the admiring public. Pictures from this fun and fashionable lunch can be seen here at: Sarah, Mike and Owen Visit Again!

May Madness whereby Action Jackson visits 3 cities and is loved by all

As you probably have noticed, we haven’t posted anything for awhile. There’s a good explanation for this: May kicked our asses.

From May 4 to May 16th, I was in NYC for the 17th meeting of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development: my first time away from the boy. And yes, it was hard, but fortunately Mike sent me daily photos which helped to keep me going as I sat in the basement of the UN building. Good times. During that time Mike played single dad for the first week. Over the weekend, the boys took the train up to visit me in NYC which also happened to be Mother’s Day. Highlights include me getting a beautiful necklace from AJ on mother’s day and seeing AJ’s face the first time he saw the New York City skyline. He has an expression we call ‘awesome face’ where he drops his jaw and opens his eyes and if he could talk he’d say ‘awwwesome!!!’ This face has been reserved for when we hold him upside down or he is lifted above our heads like an airplane. Alternate views of reality I guess you could say. But this time, he was upright and it was all the city, which I suppose in its own way is also an alternative view of reality. I think it’s fair to say that for a brief moment, we blew his baby mind.

The second week it turned out Mike had to give a presentation in Minneapolis, so the boys spent the week staying with my parents where they got to see grandparents, his one remaining great-grandparent, great-grandma Pearl, aunts, uncles, cousins, great-aunts, great-uncles, friends, neighbors and anyone who happened to pass by. What can we say? We’re a friendly folk!

Upon my return to DC on Saturday the 16th, Mike and I had 23 hrs together… at which point he flew to Florida on the 17th. I was in DC for a week with the boy where I played single mom most of the week (Mike was in town Tues nite through Wed nite, at which point he left again, this time for Ohio).

On Saturday the 23rd we all got back on a plane and flew to Chicago where we visited Kathy, Nathan and cousin Henry. Highlights included going to the zoo, seeing our friend Meg, a BBQ on Memorial day and Cousin Bath!

On Tuesday the 26th, Mike and AJ flew back to DC, and I went out to a, um, charming ‘vintage’ – read moldy and frightening – hotel/golf course built in the 50s for a meeting. I flew back to DC on the nite of the 28th. Pretty much we’ve all been drooling masses of exhausted protoplasm since then. Correction, Mike and I have been drooling masses of protoplasm, AJ keeps on going like the energizer bunny. Ah the joys of youth!

Fortunately, all of our trips resulted in seeing lots of good friends and family and more importantly, many good photos which we posted on the blog!
